- Does this trainer have ample experience and credible certifications?
When considering a trainer, do not rely on social media engagements and reach. Competence is not measured by one’s presence online. There are a lot of pretentious know-it-alls everywhere. You must be diligent with your research.
Fitness involves science. Naturally, those who present themselves to be experts or practitioners in the field need to have baseline training. The last thing you want is to hire somebody who relies on whatever information they see in Google or on Reddit.
Look for their academic credentials. Have they graduated from courses related to fitness, such as Sports Science? This is not always a guarantee that you will have the best personal trainer. But at least you know they have a solid background in the field.
Some trainers may not have studied health science. Obviously, there are credible personalities in this space who entered the scene late.

- Do I feel comfortable with this person?
No matter how good someone looks on paper, you must be able to have a comfort level with your trainer.
Some may call it intuition, some refer to it as a gut feel. But you know yourself best. You can assess if you see yourself spending time with the person you are considering.
Remember, s/he will be your trainer. That person will spend a lot of time with you. Since fitness needs a holistic approach to health, that means your trainer will examine a lot of areas of your daily life.
Opening up about such details can sometimes feel intrusive. But that is part of the equation. There will be hard, probing, and pointed questions. S/he will ask about your eating habits, your weight, and your sleeping patterns, among others.
On its own, the thought is already uncomfortable. So imagine opening up to someone you do not feel at ease with. It will be a very painful experience.
Do not be afraid to trust your instincts. Assess your compatibility with your potential fitness trainers.
- Are we on the same page when it comes to my goals and our expectations?
Personal trainers, you should know as early as now, will want to push you.
This is their job. Of course, they want you to get out of your comfort zone. Their goal is to show you that you can be better, stronger, and healthier.
But, this comes with the understanding that you both have agreed on a set of parameters.
It will not work if your trainer will allow you to only work out whenever you want. You will gain no muscle if s/he allows you to refuse to try heavier weights or rest for longer periods. It will be counterproductive if s/he will not care about what and how much you eat.
But, do you think you would want to work out if your trainer will terrorize you? It is also nonsensical if you become scared of the process because there is too much pressure.
If you are already experiencing injuries because of too much, too soon, you will get turned off.
So s/he must understand your goals. If needed, s/he will also suggest how you can improve and get better.
There is a way to help someone achieve more than what they think they can do. An inspiring trainer will bring you to greater heights.
- Does this trainer balance being professional and personal?
Clients like yourself and personal trainers are not robots. Working out is not as easy as giving and following a set of instructions.
There has to be a personal touch with fitness training.
If you are a client, it helps a lot if you know that your trainer cares for you and your wellbeing. It will inspire you more if you know where the other person is coming from.
This way, you will understand if s/he is pushing you.
But, even if there is a healthy client-trainer relationship, there must still be professionalism. You and your trainer have to be aware of your boundaries.
- Is the personal trainer focused on the client during their sessions?
It is so easy to get distracted when working out. Other people surround you. Sometimes, there is loud music. Acquaintances will sometimes start small talk, ask questions, and say hi.
Of course, there is the cellphone. You do not want someone focused on their mobile device during a session you are paying for.
Before hiring a trainer, observe him/her first.
